Uninvited Guests

This debut collection of poems, composed with no thought to commercial publication and discovered by Green Writers Press by happenstance, addresses events in the poet’s life that every reader can relate to — friendships, the beginning, middle, and end of romantic relationships, and the death of a loved one. And they do so with “stiletto-sharp” metaphors — “rosebuds stillborn in the falling snow” — and wry observations — “Trying Again: Like an old shoe comfortable for a while but still causing blisters” — that evoke from the reader a knowing nod and sometimes an outright laugh. Short, disarming, crafted with carefully calibrated rhythms and innovative rhymes, these poems “skulk in the grass” and, while your guard is down, “barge right in” to your consciousness, uninvited guests.

A special, limited edition version of Uninvited Guests is also available for purchase.

Advance Praise for Uninvited Guests

“Don Glazer’s intensely personal poems are about relationships between people, their beginnings and endings. They capture fragments of intimate scenes and evoke the simultaneous range of feelings familiar to anyone who has lived a life—from craving, longing, and fervor to bemusement, anger, resentment, and frustration, to a final wise sorrow and acceptance. Reading them is like a peek into a diary we all wish we’d kept.”

Christian McLaughlin, producer of the
Academy Award-nominated A Better Life

“Don Glazer has written a collection of poems that gently guide our insights through the depiction of wonderfully painted details. The corners of a stamp. A stiletto. The ring of wind chimes. These beautifully crafted words show us that sometimes the truth lies within the reach of our fingertips.”

Ellis Paul, singer/songwriter, a fifteen-time winner, Boston Music Awards

“Donald Glazer’s debut poetry collection is an ode to the textures and tastes of language itself celebrating the intimate pulls of diction, language, and conversation. The simple elegance of Glazer’s words and minimal language forces the images to hold strong in the reader’s mind, their smartly sharp sounds left balanced on the tip of the tongue. While the poems throughout this collection are short and direct, they hold the weight of precision and nostalgia of common human experience of loss, love and growing old. These poems are meant to be read out loud, the words caught and held in bittersweet remembrance.”

Haley Hutchison, 2023 Bread Loaf Fellow
